Picture your favourite color. How does seeing that color make you feel? Is it a calming green or a vibrant yellow or a classic black? We do not always realize it, but color is closely tied to our emotions. Even our language reflects this. We are ‘tickled pink’, ‘seeing red’, or ‘feeling blue’.

Despite the leap in progress made in diagnosing and treating depression, people are afraid to even say the ‘D’ word on the pretext of being judged. As part of the research, we formulated a three-step design methodology using color as the core ingredient to derive distinctive identities for different types of depression.

We kicked off the research with a survey to identify an individual’s psychology of color-emotion association and understanding of depression. The analysis of the 150 survey responses sufficed the objectives of the research and helped to deduce the color codes for the six basic emotions.

The research work proposed a three-step methodology, to define the complex emotional experiences of depression using color as a visual language. Due to the research time limit, the effectiveness of developed color identities were pending evaluation with people going through depression.
